STATUS Alive – working liaison, Section 18 RANK None recognised by Section 18; self-described as of “the Order” OCCUPATION Casework consultant, alongside DikDik ACCESS LEVEL Informal – vouched for personally by DikDik and Asquith AGE Unrecorded – by his own account, asleep in stasis for roughly a thousand years ORIGINS Not of this world; a refugee from a scout vessel that fled Krell and crashed at Borthanza a millennium ago YEARS OF SERVICE N/A – ally, not an Agent FIRST ON RECORD Session 65 – aboard the buried vessel at Borthanza
Skarr is, on paper, exactly the kind of thing Section 18 exists to put down – a mind flayer, tentacled and telepathic, found alive and awake aboard the vessel buried beneath Borthanza. In practice he walked out of that ship as an ally rather than a threat, and has spent every session since proving, with visible effort, that the distinction is worth maintaining. He wears a fitted black leather containment suit purpose-built to keep his tentacles furled against his face until he actually needs them, and smells faintly, incongruously, of vanilla.
His own account of how he got here is the closest thing Section 18 has to a primary source on the Cataclysm itself: his scouting vessel was fleeing Krell’s forces a thousand years ago when a portal – opened, he believes, by ambitious sorcerers of this world – dragged both ships through into this system. Skarr crash-landed in the Green Hell, was found by a much younger Sarry Oatsiet, and spent the following centuries in engineered stasis inside a repurposed elven temple, waiting for a world he judged too primitive to help him out of that fight to catch up. It has, by his own admission, taken slightly too long.
FILE NOTES
Introduced to Bowlohr, Sam, and Agent Reece without much ceremony, Skarr settled into Section 18’s routine faster than anyone expected from a creature that opens conversations by asking permission to eat the nearest corpse. He works casework alongside DikDik, reviews patrol reports for anything that reads as Krell’s handiwork, and has been caught more than once cheating at cards with detect thoughts – DikDik’s own words for it were “you are one cheatin’ cephalopod.”
He is the clearest source Section 18 has ever had on the Children of the Eye, on the githyanki, and on Krell himself – not a god, in Skarr’s telling, but a world-eater who harvests Quintessence from the deaths of whole populations and moves on, the same way a child abandons a toy. He is disarmingly honest about the Children being someone’s deliberate creation, possibly his own kind’s, and about what the Sarry Oatsiet’s people sacrificed to hide his ship in the first place. None of it reads as an act. All of it is delivered with the same flat, mildly hungry interest.
“Ahh, now they are impressive works. Very time consuming and complex. Strong, tough, and loyal beyond question.”
Skarr, on the Children of the Eye
STATUS: Filed under The Unknown. Not a prisoner, not quite a colleague, and still, on paper, exactly the sort of thing the Section exists to stop. Filed as an asset for as long as that keeps being true, and watched carefully in case it stops.
