FIRST ON RECORD Session 63 – guarding the lift chamber against the Agents and a flood of Grimlocks alike

It woke the moment the lift chamber’s doors ground open – a raised platform lighting up like a spotlight, and on it a silvery, four-armed shape barely taller than a man, two wicked scythes held loose in its lower hands.

Its head lifted slowly, as if surfacing from a long sleep. Its eyes caught first: a dull amber-yellow glow, just bright enough to throw shadowy light five feet in every direction.

The mind flayers of Thoon – a stranger, more esoteric sect than the illithids Section 18 has otherwise catalogued, fixated on gathering a substance they call quintessence rather than simply feeding – build these things as foot soldiers, and it showed.

It didn’t hesitate, didn’t negotiate, and didn’t especially seem to notice the Grimlocks pouring into the same room behind the Agents, clicking and chanting their way toward the same door it was standing in front of.

It fought like something built rather than born – a lumbering gait between swings, both scythes brought around together rather than singly, no wasted motion and no sign of pain.

Raven and Krusha closed on it together before it landed more than a glancing blow on either of them, and it went down the way its kind are built to: no death throes, no last gesture, just gone the instant its last hit point emptied out, exactly as advertised.

Whatever it was actually guarding, the Agents didn’t get a clean look at it before the Grimlocks were on them in force.

The chamber beyond led on to the lift itself – and, not far past that, the buried vessel the Scyther had apparently been left there to keep sealed.

STATUS: Filed under The Unknown as a species/threat record, not an individual. One data point in a much larger, still mostly unmapped picture of what the Thoon sect actually built at Borthanza, and why.
