Officer Sanchez came up through Vice without leaving much of a mark on the arrest ledger. What he did leave a mark on was the front-office furniture, parking himself on a desk often enough that the rest of the House took to calling him NutScratcher behind his back, for the habit that gave him away from across the room. Portly, lanky with it, mid-twenties, and never without the moustache, he made up in presence what he lacked in casework.

He worked the front desk in a pairing with Kowalski that outlasted most partnerships at Section 18 – trading banter with every Agent who passed through, volunteering the pair of them for whatever needed doing, whether that was Hawk’s funeral or a raid on the Collector’s den. He came closer than most to not seeing any of it through: cornered at an apothecary on Cove Street by an infected, axe-wielding Agent Dew, he took a blow that should have finished him and made it back out the door regardless.

Kowalski’s death broke something loose in him that never quite reset. Witnesses found him walking away from the body afterward, muttering to himself, and it took Brin calling his name twice to bring him back. Offered leave, he refused it flat, and made good on that refusal weeks later at the Regent Theatre – charging through fire and smoke to reach Griffiths himself. He was still carrying a rune-trapped note pulled from an earlier arrest, and rather than let anyone else near it, he read the last line himself, point-blank, in Griffiths’ face.

“You killed Kowalski!!!”

STATUS: Filed under The Good. The blast that killed him also tore into Griffiths and Pitr, which was very likely the point he meant to make with it. Section 18 doesn’t get many clean acts of vengeance on the books – this one is filed as exactly that, and nothing less.
