A meteor shower over a public park should have been the strangest part of the night. It wasn’t. What actually came down was no meteor at all – an escape pod, skipping three times across open ground before it finally dug in and stopped, leaving a scorched furrow through the park like the mark of some vast plough. A second, larger vessel came down not far behind it, on the far side of the same park.

The air over the site kept shimmering with heat long after the fires had been put out, and witnesses close to the smaller pod couldn’t agree on what, if anything, they’d actually seen climb out of it. Witnesses further back had considerably less trouble describing what they saw run past them – and no explanation for why nobody nearby reacted to it at all.

The smaller pod’s sole passenger, Varan, survived the landing and was recovered by Section 18 before the Dranathess could take custody of her themselves. What came down in the second, larger vessel has not been confirmed.
