Griffiths

Crowe’s shot at Griffiths went wide.

“It seems I underestimated you, Agent Raven,”

Griffiths called out, then turned on Pitr – “you fuckin’ Crawny Fish halfwit, stop pissing about and dust this bitch!”

Pitr answered with a sound burst down the corridor, and something in the insult landed harder than the order did.

“DON’T CALL ME THAT! Ha-HAAA! I told you not to call me that! Leave my brother alone, you bitch, ha-haaa!”

The blast clipped Raven and stunned Pitr in the bargain, and Griffiths began to come apart at the edges entirely, dissolving into a cloud of smoke that seeped under the door at the corridor’s end.

Pitr

Raven fell back toward Caleb’s cell as Crowe held the passage. The door to the children’s area opened on another Nesterrook sounding the alarm while Krusha carried the seizing girl to the relative safety of the breach room. A tanglefoot bag from Raven caught the half-orc, though he tore free of most of it and charged Crowe down the cell corridor just as their own wild kemercannon shot buried itself in a doorframe instead. The Nesterrook went down fast – but Griffiths reformed to empty another volley of missiles into Raven, his own images splitting attention and taking the edge off the Agents’ return fire. Krusha called down KemerLexi’s blessing over the group between exchanges.

It wasn’t enough to save Raven a fall – retreating under fire drew an opportunity attack from Griffiths’ mace that put her down outright. Griffiths retreated into gaseous form as Krusha rushed to revive her; both of them shook off the poison that came with the hit before it could do worse.

The children’s ward gave up its residents reluctantly. A boy who called himself Jay Sun beckoned them over first, furtive and strange.

“Are you here to take me back? Home? They’re mad. I don’t belong here. I’m different – I have gifts, you know? That’s why they sent me here. They were afraid. Of my talent. I can break things – just thinking about it. Watch…”

Jay Sun

He followed along afterward, vacant-eyed, once he’d made his point with a display of what Raven could only describe as mind-bending talent. A young Drusalian girl, Alia, came too, rocking and clutching a battered ceramic doll – coaxed out only with the promise of food for the doll itself, Onzaa, which her grandmother had given her to eat her nightmares and keep the hag Zlota Babbaa from finding her in her sleep. Then Pitr – delighted, and increasingly hard to reconcile with the earlier explosion – called out from his own cell.

“Mikael, you live! That makes me very happy, ha haaa! Do you want out?”

Mikael

Pitr

The name, and Pitr’s fist cracking the glass of his own cell window, was enough to send Crowe sprinting back to grab Caleb – who fought like something possessed, biting, kicking, spitting, all the way into the corridor. That was when Mikael arrived.

Raven wounded him; he shrugged it off and kept coming. Crowe’s shot connected and Krusha invoked KemerLexi’s power to try to stop him outright – Mikael simply barged through, shoving past both Agents (Raven managing a cut on the way, Crowe left with nothing in hand to swing at all), grabbed a Nesterrook corpse off the floor, and began slamming it bodily into the ceiling and pipework overhead in a spray of clanging metal and worse. A pipe finally gave way as they made for the breach room, Krusha realising there was nothing left to do for Caleb but end the fight – Crowe cracked the boy over the skull with a sap and carried him the rest of the way unconscious.

Water, slime, oil, dead rodents and worse surged into the breach room behind them through the ruptured pipe.

Crowe tried the door. It wouldn’t lock.

The flow, at least, finally stopped.
