The Ziggurat

Deep in what most maps simply mark as Green Hell, the true name of the jungle surrounding the ziggurat is the Charnwood – and the structure itself has stood there since long before anyone surveying it could put a date to. Stone pillars line a single great hall, leading up to the ruin of a statue once massive enough to reach the ceiling; its head and arms were smashed to rubble long before the Agents ever set foot inside, whether by time, war, or something more deliberate.

FILE NOTES

The Kaka-Taibo tribes who live nearest it call the whole structure Borthanza – House of the Fallen Sky – and shun it outright, speaking only of something they call the Hungry Stone.

Whatever that refers to, none of them offered to explain it further, and the Agents didn’t get the chance to ask twice.

The air inside is heavy in a way that has nothing to do with the jungle outside – damp, decayed, and carrying what more than one visitor has described as something unnatural.

Blood and ichor mark the stone near the ruined statue, claws scoring the surface around it: something fought here, and something died, long before the Agents’ own party added to the tally.

What’s left of the ruined statue – twenty feet of stone even with its head and arms gone, cloaked and masked, eyes rendered as carved symbols rather than orbs – belongs to Fenmarel Mestarine: elven deity of the feral, the outcast, the scapegoat, and the solitary.

His chief symbol is a pair of eyes staring out of darkness, an uncomfortable echo of the illithid presence buried in the same complex that nobody involved has offered an explanation for.

Murals elsewhere in the hall carry the same eyes, the same masked, foliage-wrapped figure, repeated enough times to make clear this wasn’t a minor shrine.
