The Dranathess answer to nobody at Section 18, which is precisely the problem. They arrive in dark blue and gold trim armour, Cobalt Rangers in tow, and they take what they came for – evidence, custody, jurisdiction – whether or not anyone in the room agrees they’re entitled to it. Brin gives them room rather than a fight, which tells its own story about where they actually sit in the Empire’s pecking order.

Their first real collision with the Agents came when the dog-beast’s body and Brad’s remains vanished from Sam’s morgue overnight, taken without a word to anyone at Section 18. It wasn’t the last time. When the Sunset Ray hostage crisis broke, it was Dranathess mages who conjured the skimmers and cast Dark Vision over the boarding team – useful allies, when their interests happen to line up with the Agents’ own.

They surfaced again, more openly hostile, over custody of Varan – the ‘sky woman’ recovered from a crashed vessel in the Section – and the bodies recovered alongside her. Sorceror Kor-En, dispatched to collect both, was turned away at the door by Brin on a technicality – diplomatic asylum, filed correctly, papers in order – and didn’t take the loss quietly.

Asquith has his own theory about what they actually want, for whatever it’s worth: that an order built on arcane research would find ‘unorthodox creatures’ a great deal more interesting as soldiers than as a public menace to be quietly cleaned up.

STATUS: Filed under The Good – reluctantly. The Dranathess aren’t people, and they’ve never once behaved like they consider themselves accountable to Section 18’s filing system. But cooperative when it counts, and no confirmed harm done to an Agent, is more than most factions on this list can claim.
